Welcome Letter from the Program Director

Portrait of Dr. Jeffrey CroutWelcome to the Children’s of Mississippi pediatric residency program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center! We are excited that you are taking time to learn more about the unique and diverse training opportunities we have at our location.

Since 1956, UMMC has housed Mississippi’s only pediatric residency program in its only children’s hospital. Over the intervening decades, the size of our trainee group has grown tremendously, with our facility now being the home to 48 categorical pediatric residents, 20 combined medicine/pediatric residents, an associated child-neurology residency program and five pediatric fellowships. Additionally, our community outreach has expanded to include not only the Jackson Metropolitan area, but also clinics and facilities from the Gulf Coast in the south to Tupelo, MS, in our northeast corner.

Children’s Hospital on the main UMMC campus in Jackson is comprised of the Blair E. Batson Tower, the Kathy and Joe Sanderson Tower and the Colonel Harland Sanders Emergency Department. These facilities work in conjunction with the Winfred L. Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants, also situated at our main location. General Pediatric ambulatory care is provided at the Batson Kids Clinic, located only a short walk from each of these structures. As the state’s only dedicated children’s hospital system, our facilities serve a vast and diverse community of patients with a tremendous variety of pathologies. The trainees at UMMC truly see everything the field of pediatrics has to offer.

Our Department of Pediatrics is composed of over 170 pediatricians, with specialists in more than 30 fields of practice. Having this large number of physicians allows our residents to gain exposure with a huge assortment of technologies and learn from a group of professionals who are dedicated to excellence in teaching.

The faculty and staff at Children’s of Mississippi are passionate in providing a comprehensive training program for our residents. We hope to prepare our learners not only for a lifetime of service and challenge but to also focus on gaining skills for continuing professional growth and personal well-being that will sustain them their entire career. We hope that you find our website helpful and will consider visiting our one-of-a-kind program!
